Refurbished Flint Basketball Courts Officially Opened as 3×3 Summer Tour Tips Off
Flint, North Wales – Basketball in Flint took a major step forward this past weekend as Basketball Wales officially opened the newly refurbished outdoor basketball courts opposite the Jade Jones Pavilion (CH6 5ER), marking the occasion with the tip-off of the 2025 Basketball Wales 3×3 Summer Tour.
The event was attended by community members, players, and special guests, celebrating the transformation of the courts into a state-of-the-art public basketball facility.
The ribbon-cutting was performed by Flint councillor Mared Eastwood, Cabinet Member for Education, Welsh Language, Culture and Leisure; Carolyn Thomas MS for North Wales; and Neil Rimell, Leisure Operations Manager at Gwella. Their presence underlined the importance of collaborative efforts between sport, government, and community.
Thanks to capital funding from Sport Wales and the Welsh Government, the facility now features:
- A brand-new tarmac surface
- Official FIBA court markings
- Four professional Mega Slam basketball hoops
“This investment has completely transformed the courts into a top-tier community facility,” said Gavin Williams, Chief Operating Officer of Basketball Wales.
“We’re excited to see more young people getting involved in the sport and having access to a space that meets both recreational and performance needs. Projects like this reflect the power of partnership between local communities and national bodies to grow the game across Wales. We would like to thank Sport Wales, Welsh Government and Flintshire county council for their support in this capital grant project ”
The revamped courts are already generating buzz, providing a high-quality space for casual play, coaching, and competitive 3×3 events. Their inclusion in the Basketball Wales Summer Tour highlights their new status as a regional hub for the sport.
The FIBA-standard layout and durable Mega Slam hoops ensure the facility is built for serious play while remaining welcoming and inclusive for everyone—from first-time players to seasoned ballers.
This project is a direct result of collaboration between Basketball Wales, Sport Wales, the Welsh Government, and local council. It stands as a shining example of how investment in community sports infrastructure can deliver lasting value.
