New Collaboration to Inspire Future Female Basketball Stars in Wales
Cardiff Met Archers and Basketball Wales have joined forces to launch the Future Stars League, a pilot programme aimed at nurturing the next generation of female basketball talent in Wales. Focusing on under-12 girls from South Wales, this project offers young players the opportunity to develop their skills through coaching and competitive games. Importantly, Basketball Wales supports this pilot with funding from our Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (ED&I) budget, reinforcing our commitment to inclusively growing the sport across all levels.
Supporting the Next Generation of Female Athletes
The Future Stars League will bring together young players from clubs across South Wales, including Pontypridd Panthers, Tribal Hunters, Swansea Storm, Swansea troopers and Cardiff Met Archers. More than just a competition, this league is designed to empower these girls, helping them build confidence and a passion for the game.
The head of basketball at Cardiff met archers, Sarah Wagstaff, shared her enthusiasm for the programme: “We’re delighted that the Under-12 Future Stars League is now underway. It’s a wonderful initiative that we’ve developed alongside Basketball Wales. This age group is crucial for the development of basketball in Wales, and it’s important we provide competition and strong female role models. We’re especially excited to have our SLB star, Jenna, involved in overseeing the league. I believe this is the beginning of something special.”
An Opportunity to Learn and Be Inspired
A unique aspect of the Future Stars League is that each session will take place alongside Cardiff Met Archers’ home games in the SLB professional women’s league. Not only will the girls have the chance to play on the same court as their role models, but they will also receive free entry to watch the Archers play. By seeing these top athletes in action, the hope is that the young players will be motivated to pursue their own basketball journey.
This connection between the under-12 players and their SLB counterparts creates a sense of continuity and inspiration, reinforcing the league’s focus on development.
