National Teams
The Basketball Wales Player Pathway is a comprehensive framework designed to develop basketball players from grassroots (schools, clubs) through to elite levels (national teams). This pathway ensures everyone has the chance to play and enjoy basketball for as long as possible in an optimal environment.
The journey begins with the U13 Regional Hubs, located across Wales and led by qualified Basketball Wales coaches. These hubs welcome boys and girls in school years 6, 7, and 8, focusing on foundational skills and enjoyment of the game.
Each September, Basketball Wales holds national team trials where clubs can nominate their most talented players for the National Academy or Development Academy programs. Trial details are typically announced in August through our membership database, social media, and affiliated clubs. Clubs are responsible for nominating players who meet specific criteria to participate in these trials.
The National Academy consists of the top 30 boys (U13-U17) and top 30 girls (U13-U18) selected at trials. The Development Academy, our second tier, supports approximately 20 boys and girls who show potential to progress toward the academy level. Players may move between the academy and development squads throughout the season.
Players in both the National Academy and Development squads are eligible for selection to represent Wales in the Four Nations competition (England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) at U14, U15, and U17 levels. National teams will also have opportunities for additional test matches against Northern Ireland and selected European tournaments, providing vital international experience.
