Bringing basketball to your community – one hoop at a time

- Building partnerships across education, sport, and local government

What’s this all about?
Thanks to Sport Wales Capital funding, Basketball Wales distributes up to 40 Mega Slam outdoor basketball hoops across Wales. The goal is to increase access to high-quality outdoor basketball and support more people in getting active.
You can apply for 1 or 2 hoops to either:
- Replace an existing outdoor hoop in poor condition
- Set up a new hoop in a public space that will benefit your local community
Who can apply?
- You can apply if you are:
- A school, basketball club, community organisation, or local authority based in Wales
- Proposing to install the hoop in a location that is open and accessible to the public at all times
- Able to organise and fund the installation of the hoop
- Covered by public liability insurance for the site
- Committed to checking and maintaining the net monthly
Application Requirements
Public Accessibility: The hoop must be installed in a location that is open and accessible to the public. If the hoop is to be located on school property, it should be available for community use outside of school hours (for example, roughly 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM on weekdays) and accessible during weekends and school holidays.
Free to Use: The applicant must confirm that the hoop will be free for anyone to use, with no fees or charges at any time. There should be no commercial gain or exclusive use – the facility is for the community’s benefit.
Regular Maintenance (Monthly Net Checks): The applicant must commit to a maintenance plan for the hoop. This includes performing monthly checks of the net (and the hoop’s overall condition) to ensure it remains safe, intact, and in good condition. Any damages or wear should be addressed promptly as part of this upkeep.
Public Liability Insurance: The applicant is required to have public liability insurance covering the use of the hoop. Proof of a valid insurance policy (such as a certificate of insurance) should be provided with the application. This insurance will protect against any claims in case of accidents or injuries related to the use of the hoop.
Land Ownership or Permission: Documentation must be provided to prove the applicant has the right to use the land where the hoop will be installed. This can be either proof of land ownership (if the applicant owns the site) or written permission from the landowner. The permission letter or agreement should explicitly allow the installation of the hoop and public access to it.
How to apply
Step 1 – Gather your documents
You will need to upload the following with your application:
- Photos of the proposed hoop location
- Photos of any existing hoop (if this is a replacement)
- Proof of land ownership or written permission from the landowner
- A valid public liability insurance certificate
- A short (250-word max) statement explaining how this hoop will benefit your community
- Confirmation that you’ve checked whether planning permission is required for installation
Step 2 – Complete the application form

- Be sure to tick all the confirmation boxes at the end to show that you understand your responsibilities and that your application is complete.
What we’re looking for
There are no regional quotas. Every application will be reviewed individually. We’ll prioritise:
- Areas with limited or no access to outdoor basketball facilities.
- Locations with a clear plan and community benefit.
- Places that are ready to install.
- Applications showing collaboration or wide community reach.
What happens after you apply?
- All applications received will be acknowledged by email.
- Basketball Wales will review all applications.
- Eligibility check – All applications that fail to meet the minimum. eligibility requirements will not proceed to the next stage.
- Shortlisted applications will be passed to a review panel.
- The panel will assess each one using an internal scoring system.
- If successful, you’ll receive an offer letter with the next steps.
After approval
Approved applicants will be required to:
- Cover all installation costs and arrange the installation.
- Check and maintain the net(s) monthly.
- Send a short report and photo after installation (template to be provided)
- Complete installation
- Share photos of your new hoop in action and tag @basketballWales on social media.
Limited supply – Apply Early
We have a limited number of hoops available, and demand is expected to be high.
Applications will be reviewed in the order they are received, and if approved, hoops will be allocated on a rolling basis. Once all hoops have been assigned, we will not be able to fund any further applications.
To give yourself the best chance, please submit your application as early as possible.
