Wales U17 Men v Žalgiris U17 Men

Wales U17 Earn Impressive Win Over Žalgiris
Wales U17 delivered a strong and determined performance to secure an 81–74 victory over Žalgiris, overcoming a physical and competitive opponent in an entertaining international contest.
The Welsh side showed composure and resilience throughout, controlling key moments of the game and producing a balanced team performance on both ends of the floor.
Wales made a solid start and maintained their intensity across all four quarters, using their presence inside to good effect. They finished with 46 points in the paint and consistently created second-chance opportunities, helping them build and protect their lead. Despite Žalgiris staying within striking distance, Wales managed the game well down the stretch to close out an important win.
Leading the way was M. Wells, who produced an outstanding performance with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Shooting efficiently from both inside and beyond the arc, Wells provided a constant scoring threat while also contributing strongly on the boards.
Support came from across the roster, with M. Hughes adding 12 points and W. Morgan contributing 9 points alongside a solid defensive display. Off the bench, A. Hare made an impact with 9 points, while L. Rhys added 5, ensuring Wales maintained energy and depth throughout the game.
Captain J. Smith played an important leadership role, finishing with 7 rebounds and 4 assists while helping to organise the team during key phases of the contest.
Defensively, Wales were particularly effective in limiting Žalgiris’ perimeter scoring, holding them to just 9% from three-point range. Their defensive pressure disrupted the opposition’s rhythm and forced difficult shooting opportunities, which proved crucial in maintaining control.
Although Wales committed turnovers at times, their ability to respond with defensive stops and strong rebounding ensured Žalgiris were unable to fully capitalise. The team’s overall effort and togetherness were evident, with contributions coming from across the lineup.
This result represents a positive step forward for Wales U17, highlighting their development and ability to compete with strong European opposition. The experience and confidence gained from this performance will be valuable as the squad continues its international campaign.
