Wales U15 v Žalgiris U15

Wales U15 Gain Valuable Experience Against Strong Žalgiris Side
Wales U15 faced a tough test against a high-quality Žalgiris team, falling to a 122–37 defeat in an intense international matchup. Despite the challenging result, the fixture provided an important learning opportunity for the young Welsh squad against one of Europe’s well-drilled development programmes.
From the opening tip, Žalgiris imposed their tempo on the game, combining aggressive defence with efficient scoring. Wales found it difficult to establish offensive rhythm, shooting 20% from the field and just 6% from beyond the arc. Under constant pressure, turnovers proved costly, with Žalgiris converting these opportunities into 56 points.
The Lithuanian side showcased their depth and cohesion throughout, with multiple players contributing across the scoreboard. T. Levulis led all scorers with 23 points, while K. Adomaitis added an impressive double-double of 18 points and 15 rebounds. Strong ball movement and transition play allowed Žalgiris to build momentum, finishing with 43 fast-break points and 36 assists as a team.
For Wales, there were still positives to take from the performance. S. Fricker led the team with 10 points and worked hard on the boards to record 12 rebounds. L. Jones provided a spark off the bench with 8 points, while captain E. Alford contributed 7 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals in a determined all-round display.
Wales also showed resilience in rebounding situations, collecting 13 offensive boards and continuing to compete physically despite the scoreboard. However, the difference in ball security and shot efficiency ultimately proved decisive, with Wales committing 44 turnovers compared to Žalgiris’ 18.
While the result did not reflect the effort shown, the match offered valuable insight into the level required at elite European youth basketball. Experiences like this are vital in the development of young players, helping them adapt to higher intensity, quicker decision-making, and more structured team play.
Wales U15 will look to take these lessons forward as they continue their development journey, using the experience gained to grow and improve in future international competition.
