Basketball Wales is committed to the training, development, and retention of officials, including referees, table officials, and statisticians. These roles are vital to ensuring fairness, accuracy, and the smooth running of every game.
A basketball game requires two or three referees on the court to oversee gameplay. Referees are responsible for:
- Stopping the game for rule infringements,
- Calling fouls or violations,
- Confirming when a basket is scored,
- And much more.
Referees work closely with table officials and statisticians to uphold the integrity of the game.

Referee
A basketball referee is responsible for enforcing the rules of the game, making calls and decisions , communicating with players and coaches, and managing the game flow. There is a demand for more referees in Wales to help service our leagues and support the growth of the sport in Wales.
Table Official
The table officials shall sit at the centre of the table on one side of the court, between the team benches. They are responsible for recording the actions that occur during the game and operating the different electronic devices necessary for the proper man- agement of a basketball game.
Statistician
A basketball statistician is a game official who is responsible for recording all actions for both teams during a game. At least two statisticians officiate at each game – one (the caller) calls all the action on court to the second statistician (the computer operator), who inputs these actions into a computer.
