WALES LEAVES ITS MARK AT WORLD MAXI BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The FIMBA World Maxi Basketball Championships 2025 concluded earlier this month in Ticino, Switzerland, with over 400 teams from across the globe gathering for one of the most significant events in masters basketball history. Among the 18 British teams competing, several Welsh players stood out, proudly representing their nation on the global stage and proving that Welsh basketball is on the rise.
Welsh Stars Shine in Women’s 35+ Category
In the Women’s 35+ age group, the Great Britain 35+ team secured a strong fourth place finish, thanks to a key victory over Germany in their final game. The win was driven by standout performances from Sarah Wagstaff and Laura Shanahan of Cardiff Met Archers, who contributed 10 and 15 points respectively.
Reflecting on the experience, Laura Shanahan said:
“I am honored to fly the Welsh flag for the second time, competing against some of the top international teams at this stage. It’s been an amazing experience.”
Sarah Wagstaff, making her third appearance in the FIMBA tournament, added:
“It’s great to be able to represent Wales in this tournament again. I enjoyed being part of the GB Maxis team and I’m grateful to the coaches and support staff for this opportunity.”

Another Welsh standout, Jenny Dorney-Savage (FIMBA GB 35+), also played a pivotal role and shared her thoughts on the competition:
“We had some tough games against Estonia and Lithuania and a great one versus GB Maxis, where I got to play against my Welsh teammates Laura and Sarah. I was really impressed by the facilities we were given.”

Matthew Godfrey Rekindles His Passion in Men’s 50+ Team
On the men’s side, Matthew Godfrey represented Wales on the Great Britain Over 50 Men’s Team, which placed 20th out of 45 competing teams.
“We were unlucky not to finish in the top 16,” Matthew said. “But I have really enjoyed the opportunity of getting back on the court again. Having not played for a number of years, it’s been great to lace up the boots again and rekindle the love and passion for the game of basketball. Being part of this team reminded me of the camaraderie and shared spirit that makes basketball so special. I’m proud to have represented Great Britain and to reconnect with the game in such a meaningful way.”

What Is Maxi Basketball?
For those unfamiliar, Maxi Basketball—also known in the UK as Masters Basketball—is a competitive format governed by the International Federation of Maxi Basketball (FIMBA). It provides a platform for players aged 30 and above to continue playing basketball at a high level, long after their professional careers may have ended. It celebrates athletic longevity, skill, and the enduring love of the sport.
With inspiring performances from Welsh players across categories, Wales has clearly made its mark in the world of Maxi Basketball. As the sport continues to grow, expect to see more from these determined athletes who are showing that passion, talent, and pride don’t retire with age.
