New Basketball Courts and Hoops Provide a Boost for Communities Across Anglesey

Basketball Wales is delighted to celebrate the development of new and improved outdoor basketball facilities across Anglesey, giving local communities greater access to free places to play.

The new Mega Slam hoops and court improvements have been made possible through Welsh Government capital grant funding distributed by Sport Wales, alongside support from the Basketball Wales Mega Slam Hoops Fund.

Over the past 12 months, Môn Actif has worked in partnership with Swish Basketball by Sion Parry, Holyhead Town Council – Cyngor Tref Caergybi, Cyngor Tref Llangefni and Basketball Wales to secure new equipment and improve basketball facilities across the island.

The investment responds to a clear appetite among young people for more opportunities to play basketball. The Sport Wales 2022 School Sport Survey found that 46% of pupils across Wales—approximately 144,000 young people—wanted to play more basketball. This was higher than the figure for football and made basketball one of the sports with the greatest levels of latent demand.

Investment has already been made in several Anglesey communities, with new hoops now installed at Amlwch Leisure Centre and Y Parc in Holyhead. The Holyhead development has been supported by Holyhead Town Council and Swish Basketball.

Work is also progressing at Parc Lôn Las, where the new basketball hoops will form part of a wider project incorporating a community mural in partnership with Hwb Môn. The completed development will create an attractive and welcoming space where residents can meet, get active and enjoy basketball.

Commenting on the investment, Basketball Wales Chief Operating Officer Gavin Williams said:

“It is fantastic to see this new investment in outdoor basketball courts across Anglesey. These facilities will support the development of basketball on the island and provide opportunities for local communities to enjoy the game for many years to come.

“Basketball Wales would like to thank everyone involved in making these improvements possible, particularly the Welsh Government and the grants team at Sport Wales for their investment and continued support.”

These improvements will give children, young people and adults more opportunities to play recreationally, practise their skills and enjoy the physical and social benefits of basketball without the cost of hiring a facility.

The project demonstrates what can be achieved through effective partnership working. By bringing together local authorities, community organisations, basketball providers and national sporting bodies, the partners have delivered investment that can have a lasting impact on communities across Anglesey.
