Maesteg Miners Basketball Festival Celebrates 200 Years of Community and Sporting Excellence
The Maesteg Miners Festival of Basketball proved to be a fitting celebration of both the town’s rich sporting heritage and the Maesteg 200 celebrations, bringing together past, present and future generations of basketball players for a memorable day of competition and recognition on Sunday, 5 July.
Organised in partnership with the Maesteg 200 Committee, the festival formed part of the town’s bicentenary celebrations, marking 200 years since the founding of Maesteg. The event highlighted the important role basketball has played in the community over many decades while showcasing the exciting future of the sport in the Llynfi Valley.
The day began with the Maesteg Primary Schools Festival, featuring Nantyffyllon Primary School and Cwmfelin Primary School. The young players produced a thrilling contest that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. In dramatic fashion, Cwmfelin claimed a 20-18 victory with a basket on the final buzzer, providing a fitting start to an action-packed day.
Basketball fans were then treated to an entertaining women’s 3×3 exhibition match, supported by Cougars Basketball Club, which showcased the growing strength and talent within the women’s game across the region.
The festival concluded on court with a special showcase game between the Maesteg Miners Golden Oldies and the current Maesteg Miners Under-16 team. The exhibition perfectly symbolised the club’s proud tradition, bringing together former players who helped build basketball in the town with the next generation who will carry that legacy forward.
Following the games, attention turned to what was undoubtedly the most emotional and significant moment of the day. A special presentation ceremony honoured former and current Maesteg players who have proudly represented Wales on the international basketball stage.
Players spanning more than six decades of Welsh basketball history received specially commissioned commemorative international caps in recognition of their achievements. The oldest recipient was Phil John, aged 77, while the youngest was 15-year-old Bonnie Lewis, highlighting the remarkable tradition of international basketball talent that Maesteg continues to produce.
It was a truly special occasion for all those present as players were recognised for their outstanding contributions to Welsh basketball. The ceremony also remembered those internationals who have sadly passed away, with family members proudly accepting commemorative caps on their behalf in a moving tribute to their lasting legacy.
The commemorative caps were presented by Deputy Mayor of Maesteg Town Council, Kyle Duggan, alongside Robert Doyle, Chair of the Maesteg 200 Committee. Huw Irranca-Davies MS, Presiding Officer of the Senedd, presented the medals and trophies to the participants in the primary schools tournament, congratulating the young players on their excellent performances.
Among the guests was Basketball Wales Chief Operating Officer Gavin Williams, who praised both the organisers and the community for creating such a memorable celebration.
He said: “It was a fantastic celebration of basketball in Maesteg. Seeing the new Maesteg Miners club being formed in recent years and working to kick-start junior basketball again in the valley is fantastic.
“It was also amazing to see how many former and current Welsh internationals Maesteg has produced over the years, including a number of current female players representing Wales in the junior national teams.
“Congratulations to everyone involved in organising such a wonderful celebration of basketball.”
The Maesteg Miners Festival of Basketball perfectly captured the spirit of the town’s 200th anniversary celebrations, honouring the pioneers who established the sport locally, celebrating the achievements of those who reached the international stage, and inspiring the next generation to continue Maesteg’s proud basketball tradition for many years to come.
