Grizzlies Crowned Jr. NBA Wheelchair Champions After Outstanding Day of Competition
Young athletes from across Wales came together for another fantastic Jr. NBA Wheelchair Basketball event, showcasing skill, teamwork and determination throughout an exciting day of competition.
Representing their NBA franchises were:
- Ysgol Penglais – Grizzlies
- Bishop Vaughan – Bucks
- Olchfa Comprehensive – Hornets
- Cwm Rhymni – Suns
- Archers – Pelicans
- Ysgol Penglais 2 – Spurs
The tournament provided pupils with the opportunity to experience wheelchair basketball, learning new skills while competing in a fun and inclusive environment.
Competitive Group Stage
The opening rounds produced plenty of exciting contests as teams battled for a place in the knockout stages.
Mae'r Grizzlies were impressive throughout the group phase, remaining unbeaten with victories over the Bucks (18-8), Pelicans (16-14), Hornets (25-4) and Suns (12-6).
Mae'r Pelicans also enjoyed a strong campaign, recording wins against the Hornets (15-9), Suns (20-12) and Bucks (10-0), while the Spurs gathered momentum with victories over the Hornets (18-11), Bucks (16-4), Suns (24-12) and Pelicans (15-11).
Knockout Drama
The semi-finals delivered two entertaining encounters.
Mae'r Grizzlies booked their place in the final after overcoming the Suns 21-16, while the Pelicans edged out the Spurs 18-14 in a closely fought second semi-final.
Elsewhere, the Hornets claimed fifth place with a narrow 12-8 victory over the Bucks, before the Spurs secured third place by defeating the Suns 16-8.
Grizzlies Finish on Top
The championship game saw the Grizzlies produce another excellent performance to defeat the Pelicans 17-8 and lift the Jr. NBA Wheelchair title.
Their unbeaten run throughout the tournament highlighted consistent teamwork, strong defence and excellent ball movement, making them worthy champions.
