Dr. Ryan Chambers Joins Basketball Wales as Head of Performance and Coaching Pathways
Basketball Wales is pleased to announce the appointment of Ryan Chambers as the organisation’s new Head of Performance and Coaching Pathways. A respected figure in high-performance sport, Ryan brings over a decade of elite experience in sport science, athlete development, and performance leadership—most recently as Head of Performance at Dragons RFC.
His career spans some of the most competitive environments in Welsh sport. He led national sport science provision across all elite and pathway teams within the Welsh Rugby Union, where working under Warren Gatland he pioneered the use of wearable technology and developed data platforms to monitor over 300 athletes daily. His work has had a lasting impact on player health, performance, and long-term development.
As a PhD-qualified physiologist and researcher, Ryan’s expertise in sports technology, conditioning, and athlete monitoring systems is underpinned by academic rigour and innovation. His published work on microtechnology in rugby has informed coaching strategies at both club and international level.
In addition to his rugby credentials, Ryan has a strong background in Welsh basketball. He has been a long-time coach and player with Cougars Basketball Club and has represented Wales at international level in Four Nations junior tournaments. At the club level, he competed in the English National League for both Cardiff Celts and RCT Gladiators. Ryan has led senior teams to domestic league titles and played a key role in developing a vibrant, community-focused club structure. Off the court, he has contributed to the national game as a member of Basketball Wales’ Advisory Performance Panel
