CARDIFF TO STAGE GREAT BRITAIN YOUTH TEAM CAMPS
Basketball Wales has partnered with the British Basketball Federation (BBF) to host January’s Great Britain youth teams combine at Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Archers Arena. The invitation-only training camps will take place on the 2nd and 3rd of January as GB builds towards FIBA Youth EuroBasket 2025 next summer.
Phil Gordos, Performance Director for Basketball Wales, said: “I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to stage the GB combine. “I believe it’s hugely important for Wales to be an integral part of the GB programme, so I’m delighted we are playing our part by welcoming the best U16 and U18 players to Cardiff for this valuable selection event.
“Thanks to the British Basketball Federation, Basketball Wales, Sport Wales and Cardiff Metropolitan University for making it happen.”
Danny Williams, Programme Performance Manager for Basketball Wales, added: “Basketball Wales is moving into a new phase of performance basketball, and working alongside the BBF to host the combine allows us to showcase our ability to be a leading nation for performance environments. “It also gives us a golden opportunity to offer our Basketball Wales coaching community first-hand experience of GB-level performance, which all of our players should be working towards.”
Fiona Pimblett, Great Britain Basketball Performance Lead, said: “The GB youth team combine that we held in 2024 was a great success, allowing us to see more of our talented British players on the court at the same time, but also to have the opportunity to start building towards the summer fairly early. “I’m really looking forward to the 2025 combine and would like to say a massive thank you to Basketball Wales for hosting us in Cardiff this year.”
Players who have been selected to attend the combine will receive an invitation via email before December 5th.
They will be able to showcase their talents and future development potential to GB coaches in what is the first step on the road to FIBA Youth EuroBasket next summer.
The combine will be essential to selecting the final squads for the GB Youth teams. GB’s U16W will compete in Division A next summer after winning promotion early this year. The remaining GB teams – U16, U18 and U20 – will be in Division B.
The announcement of coaching teams will be made later in the year.
