The Basketball Wales Learning Disability team showcased resilience and determination in a thrilling day of basketball, competing against two regional English teams, England North and the Midlands, in a series of intense matches. Wales had to play each team twice, culminating in a nail-biting final that saw them bring home the gold medal.
Game 1: Wales 23 – England North 24
Wales’ opening game was a hard-fought battle against England North, with both teams neck and neck throughout. Despite a valiant effort, Wales fell just short, losing by a single point (23-24).
Game 2: Wales 19 – Midlands 16
In their second match, Wales rebounded strongly, edging out the Midlands with a 19-16 win. Solid teamwork and disciplined defense helped Wales secure their first victory of the day.
Game 3: Wales 24 – England North 25
Facing England North again, Wales were determined to avenge their earlier defeat. However, despite a close contest, the result mirrored their first encounter, with Wales suffering another heartbreaking one-point loss (24-25).
Game 4: Wales 18 – Midlands 16 (Double Overtime)
Wales’ final game against the Midlands was nothing short of dramatic. With the game tied at the end of regulation, both teams battled through two intense periods of overtime. In a thrilling finish, Wales managed to secure an 18-16 win, earning them a place in the gold medal match.
The Final: Wales 22 – England North 19
The final saw Wales face England North for the third time, with the previous two losses looming over them. England North raced to an 11-2 lead within the first four minutes, leaving the Welsh side with an uphill task. However, showing incredible spirit, Wales fought back with a massive team effort. The second half was a defensive masterclass, as the Welsh players shut down England North’s offense, clawing their way back into the game.
With relentless pressure and clutch plays in the final moments, Wales took the lead and held on to secure a 22-19 victory, claiming the gold medal and avenging their earlier losses.
This tournament was a testament to the team’s perseverance and unity, as they overcame early setbacks to emerge victorious.
