Basketball Wales Hosts U20 Men’s Trials Over Christmas Break
The LC in Swansea hosted U20 Men’s trials over the Christmas break as Basketball Wales began preparations for international 5v5 fixtures this summer.
The session focused on various offensive and defensive drills, providing coaches with the opportunity to evaluate the players’ skills, fitness, and basketball IQ. Performance Programme Manager Danny Williams commended the effort shown by the players:
“The players worked extremely hard, and the coaches were impressed with their skill level, energy, and enthusiasm on the day.”
The trials brought together players with experience representing Wales in junior age groups and Welsh newcomers who currently play for clubs and academies outside of Wales. The mix of returning talent and fresh faces is an encouraging sign for the future of Welsh basketball.
The U20 age group represents a vital stage in Basketball Wales’ performance pathway, helping to bridge the gap between junior basketball and the senior national team. Performance Director Phil Gordos highlighted the importance of this developmental phase:
“We have a number of talented players progressing through the programme, and it’s vital that we continue to monitor their development and inspire them to reach even greater heights.”
Performance staff are now working to finalise training sessions and camps in preparation for an international test series against European opposition this summer. The trials were a significant step in assembling a strong U20 Men’s squad, with exciting opportunities on the horizon.
