Basketball Wales announces new Co-Chair leadership model
Anne-Marie Koukourava will move from Vice-Chair to serve alongside Garmon Rhys as Co-Chair, bringing complementary leadership and experience to the Board.
Basketball Wales is pleased to announce the introduction of a new Co-Chair leadership model, with Anne-Marie Koukouravas moving from her current role as Vice-Chair to become Co-Chair alongside Garmon Rhys.
The new arrangement will see Anne-Marie and Garmon share responsibility for leading the Basketball Wales Board while bringing their respective skills and experience to clearly defined areas of work. The model has been designed to strengthen governance, improve organisational resilience and provide greater capacity at Board level as Basketball Wales continues to grow.
Under the job-share model, the Co-Chairs will divide lead responsibility across two broad portfolios. One portfolio covers risk, finance and governance, while the other focuses on people and culture, marketing and commercial development.
Both Co-Chairs will continue to share responsibility for the overall leadership of the Board, oversight of the organisation’s strategic plan, support for the Chief Operating Officer, external representation, stakeholder engagement and leadership of the Annual General Meeting. They will also work jointly on Board recruitment and succession planning, as well as crisis and reputational matters.
Clear leadership and accountability
The model establishes clear lead responsibilities while ensuring continuity. Each Co-Chair will lead within their agreed portfolio, with the other able to deputise when required. Full Board meetings will be chaired by agreement, with responsibilities alternating or divided according to the agenda and subject matter.
On shared matters, Anne-Marie and Garmon will represent a single agreed Board position. Time-critical decisions that sit outside an established portfolio will require joint approval, helping to maintain consistent leadership and clear accountability.
Supporting the next stage of growth
The move to a Co-Chair structure reflects Basketball Wales’ commitment to effective, modern governance and to making the best use of the experience available across its Board. It will allow the organisation to spread a growing workload, strengthen decision-making and maintain a consistent level of support for staff, members, partners and stakeholders.
