Basketball Wales and Cardiff Met Archers Support Growth of Girls’ Basketball in Wales

Basketball Wales, in collaboration with Cardiff Met Archers, recently delivered four regional basketball camps across Aberystwyth, Cardiff, Pembroke, and Wrexham. The sessions formed part of Basketball Wales’ ongoing efforts to grow female participation in the sport, aligned with the organisation’s six-year strategic plan.

The partnership with Cardiff Met Archers supports Basketball Wales’ commitment to making basketball one of the most inclusive and accessible sports in the country, with a particular emphasis on creating more opportunities for girls and women.

Cardiff Met Archers’ Sarah Wagstaff said:

“The camps were aimed at girls in years 5–9, and it was great to visit different parts of Wales and meet so many basketball-loving young players.

They also had the chance to connect with GB Maxi Basketball player Rehana Khalil, a strong role model and advocate for the sport, along with several Super League players.

Their enthusiasm highlights the importance of continuing to provide more playing opportunities, and we’re already planning our February camps.”

Speaking on her experience on the girls camp Coach Rehana Khalil said:

“Being a part of the girls only basketball camps held across Wales was a privilege. It was wonderful to see so many girls wanting to try basketball for the first time, finding enjoyment in the game and growing in confidence in just a few hours of being on the court. The girls embraced learning new skills, and showed great resilience when met with challenges. The girls showed they love to play basketball, they just need to be given more opportunities“.

These sessions offered a welcoming environment for young players to develop their skills, build confidence, and enjoy the game in a supportive setting.
