Basketball Wales Achieves NSPCC Safeguarding Level 2 Status

Basketball Wales is delighted to announce that it has successfully achieved Level 2 Safeguarding Standards for children in sport and physical activity in Wales, as assessed by the NSPCC Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU).

Since the start of the new financial year in April 2025, Basketball Wales has worked closely with the CPSU to prepare and present evidence for the Level 2 criteria. On Tuesday afternoon, the organisation received confirmation that it had met all requirements and passed the panel assessment.

The six-month process involved submitting a comprehensive portfolio of evidence followed by a detailed two-hour panel review. This achievement reflects many hours of dedicated work by Safeguarding Lead Helen Pearce, Deputy Lead Gavin Williams, Board Safeguarding Champion Lee Coulson and Sian Jones from Welsh Sports Association.

Commenting on the Level 2 recognition, Lee Coulson said:

“This announcement is a really important step for the NGB. It shows how far we’ve come as an organisation in quite a short space of time. As the sport continues to grow rapidly across the country, so too must our commitment to safeguarding young people and adults. The next step for Basketball Wales will be to begin working towards the Level 3 award, which is the highest standard an NGB in Wales can achieve.”

In the coming weeks, Basketball Wales will also be launching a new Youth Panel to give young people a stronger voice and greater influence across the sport. The panel will support the NGB’s decision-making — including in areas such as safeguarding — and will help ensure that decisions, policies, and programmes reflect the needs, motivations, and experiences of those playing, officiating, and volunteering in basketball across Wales.
