Bold Vision as Basketball Wales Appoints two New Staff Members

Basketball Wales is pleased to confirm two new appointments to strengthen the sport across all levels in the nation.

Gavin Lewis joins us as the new School and College Competition Officer. His role will focus on expanding basketball participation in schools and colleges throughout Wales, delivering structured competitions like Junior NBA and ensuring players’ access to high-quality playing opportunities.

“This is a big opportunity to grow the secondary schools competition in Wales and also to train pupils and school staff and make basketball a key sport in educational institutions. I’m really excited to step into my new role with Basketball Wales.”

Meanwhile, Beth Jones has been appointed as the North Wales Participation and Inclusion Officer (PIO). In her new role, Beth will lead efforts to drive growth and increase participation in the North Wales region. Working collaboratively with Actif North Wales, the North Wales Basketball League, and local clubs, she will focus on strengthening and expanding player pathways from schools to clubs and creating new opportunities for people to play in areas where we know there is latent demand via the Sport Wales School Sport Survey

Beth will also play a key role in developing and implementing inclusive initiatives, aimed at creating more opportunities for female participants and individuals with disabilities to engage in basketball across the region.

“Basketball has played a huge role in shaping my personality. Now, it’s my turn to give back to the sport which has given me so much, by giving others the same opportunities I had.

As a local from North Wales, I know first-hand the difficulties and challenges basketball faces in the region and that’s why this role allows me to make a real difference and to give basketball in North Wales the attention and support it deserves.” 

Basketball Wales strives for inclusivity in the sport while fostering its overall growth and development. With these two new recruits taking charge and a fresh vision, the future of Welsh Basketball looks bright.

“We are really pleased to be continuing our expansion of full-time staff across Wales. We are extremely grateful to Sport Wales and the Welsh Government for their continued support and investment, which is enabling us to grow our workforce. This expansion allows us to develop the game further and meet the increasing demand from young people across Wales, who have told us they want more opportunities to play basketball.

With Gavin and Beth joining the team, we have appointed two outstanding individuals who share the same passion and vision as myself and the Board — a vision to see Welsh basketball flourish and reach its full potential.”
