Basketball Wales unveils six-year plan to grow the game across Wales.
Because Everyone Deserves a Shot
Basketball Wales has introduced an ambitious strategy to deliver its vision for basketball to become widely recognised as the most socially inclusive and diverse sport in Wales. Capitalising on the demand to play in every corner of Wales, the strategy outlines plans to develop the game at every level – from playing in parks to representing our national teams.
Developed following consultation with key stakeholders, the Basketball Wales 2024-2030 Strategy outlines how it will address barriers to growing the game and capitalise on the immense potential for growth.
The strategy is built upon five key pillars:
- Equality, Diversity & Inclusion: Our aim is to enrich our sport by fostering diverse talent and focusing on inclusion throughout the game.
- Communities & Partnerships: Our aim is to collaborate to create opportunities for everyone to play.
- Structured Game: Our aim is to create a platform for growth, excellence, and lifelong engagement for our members. We will develop and support our clubs, schools, colleges, coaches & officials.
- Performance: We aim to elevate the sport to new heights, fostering a diverse pipeline of talented players, nurturing national teams and achieving success.
- Governing Body: Our aim is to build an innovative, well-governed body that is built around its participants. As a governing body, we will monitor the progress of this strategy, aligned with the goals.
To facilitate the successful implementation of this vision, Basketball Wales has structured its strategy into two distinct phases:
- Pivot Phase (2024-2027): We’ll pivot our approach to better meet the needs of everybody who participates in the game in Wales, consolidating, building foundations and shifting our approach. In this stage, we’ll lay the groundwork for sustained growth by focusing on structural initiatives to improve the game wherever people want to play.
- Drive Phase (2027-2030): Once we’ve built on that strong foundation and carried out a thorough review of our progress in the Pivot phase, it’s time to drive towards further growth. The next stage in the development of the game in Wales will drive basketball forward, building on the groundwork and improvements already delivered.
Reflecting on the significance of the new strategy, Gavin Williams, Chief Operating Officer of Basketball Wales, stated:
“I am very proud to launch our six-year strategy. This marks an important milestone for basketball in Wales, ensuring that we continue to make significant progress in growing and developing the sport. Through this strategy, we are taking decisive steps towards securing a stronger future for Welsh basketball at all levels.”

“Basketball is already one the most popular sports in Wales amongst children, but in every corner of Wales there is demand for more opportunities to play. The game is vibrant, diverse and popular amongst groups that are less likely to play sport. We’re determined to capitalise on the opportunity for growth and make a difference across our communities.”
The implementation of this strategy will be closely monitored, with quarterly reviews conducted by the Basketball Wales Board to track progress against key performance indicators.

Basketball Wales invites all stakeholders, including players, coaches, officials, and supporters, to engage with the strategy and play an active role in shaping the future of the sport.
