Basketball Wales Launches the Red Whistle Campaign to Support and Protect New and Under-18 Referees

Basketball Wales is proud to launch the Red Whistle Campaign, a new initiative to safeguard and support new and under-18 referees nationwide. This campaign seeks to build a culture of respect, understanding, and encouragement for the next generation of officials — starting from their very first game.

Introducing Our Red Whistle Referees

As part of the campaign launch, we recently delivered referee training to a new cohort of young and aspiring officials. Twelve new referees completed their training and have now received their official red whistles and red lanyards — a proud moment marking the start of their officiating journey.

These referees will be seen across various local leagues and basketball events, confidently stepping into their new roles. The red whistle acts as a visual reminder that they are either under the age of 18 or newly qualified and should be treated with encouragement and respect.

Why the Red Whistle?

While all referees should be treated respectfully, it’s especially important to be mindful of the pressure that new and young officials may face. We often cannot tell if a referee is under 18 or just starting out based on their appearance or performance. The red whistle provides a simple way to identify and support these individuals appropriately.

The Referee Landscape in Wales

Basketball in Wales relies heavily on young and newly trained referees to sustain the sport at the grassroots level. Without them, it would be nearly impossible to keep up with the growing number of games, tournaments, and school leagues taking place throughout the year.

However, some of these referees are already being exposed to negative behaviours from sidelines and spectators — behaviour that can significantly impact their confidence and willingness to continue officiating.

The Role of the Referee and the Power of Positivity

Referees are expected to know the rules, apply them accurately, and manage the dynamics of a fast-paced game. That’s no easy task — especially for someone who’s still learning or just starting out.

Referee coaches and mentors are there to guide them. What they don’t need is additional pressure from spectators or coaches. Positive reinforcement from the basketball community makes a world of difference. When a young referee walks away from a match feeling confident, encouraged, and safe, we strengthen the future of our sport.

What You Can Do to Help

The Red Whistle Campaign is a call to action for everyone involved in Welsh basketball — players, coaches, parents, and fans alike. Here’s how you can play your part:

• 🗣️ Say something positive to a red-whistle referee after the match.
• 👏 Cheer respectfully for both teams and create a welcoming environment.
• ✋ Step in (safely and appropriately) if others are being negative or aggressive.
• 💬 Talk about the importance of referees, especially our young ones.

We are incredibly proud of our new referees, who are already stepping up to the challenge. Their red whistles symbolise courage, learning, and potential — and they deserve all the support we can give them.
