Basketball Wales Achieves Disability Sport Wales insport NGB Ribbon Award

Basketball Wales is proud to announce that it has successfully achieved the Disability Sport Wales insport National Governing Body (NGB) Ribbon Award, recognising the organisation’s commitment to creating inclusive opportunities for everyone to participate in basketball across Wales.
The insport programme supports organisations in embedding inclusion into every aspect of their work, ensuring that disabled people have equitable opportunities to participate, compete, volunteer and lead within sport.
Following a comprehensive assessment process, the award panel praised Basketball Wales for its authentic and strategic approach to inclusion, highlighting the organisation’s commitment to ensuring basketball is a sport for all.
The panel specifically commended the impact of the Junior NBA programme, which has introduced thousands of young people across Wales to basketball in inclusive school and community settings. Recognition was also given to the Guardian Ballers programme, which continues to create meaningful opportunities for underrepresented communities to engage with the sport.
In addition, the panel highlighted the ongoing development of women’s basketball in Wales as evidence of Basketball Wales’ broader commitment to inclusion and intersectionality. These initiatives demonstrate how the organisation is working to remove barriers and create welcoming environments for people from all backgrounds and experiences.
The achievement of the Ribbon Award represents an important milestone in Basketball Wales’ inclusion journey. The presentation panel from Basketball Wales was made of key members including board directors Lee Coulson, Gareth Hicks and Lyndon Roberts supported by events coordinator Danielle Brown.
Commenting on the achievement, Basketball Wales COO Gavin Williams said:
“We are delighted to have achieved the Disability Sport Wales insport NGB Ribbon Award. Inclusion is a core value of Basketball Wales, and this recognition reflects our commitment to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy, participate and thrive within our sport. We are proud of the progress we have made, but we also recognise that this is part of an ongoing journey as we continue to build a more inclusive basketball community across Wales.”
Basketball Wales would like to thank Disability Sport Wales for its guidance and support throughout the process and looks forward to continuing its work towards even greater levels of inclusion in the years ahead.
Together, we remain committed to making basketball a sport where everyone belongs.
